No. 1: Peter Mandelson on the importance of Spin Control

Peter Mandelson is the European Union's Trade Commissioner, but for years was chief Spin Doctor (Director of Communications) to the British Labour Party and Prime Minister Tony Blair.

A keen golfer whose high office sadly leaves him little time to work on his game, Mandelson's deft control of spin has nevertheless allowed him to overcome the twin handicaps of a poor grip and dodgy on-course dress sense.

This, together with his formidable pre- and post-game psychological skills, it has made him a formidable opponent whatever the venue, and we have persuaded him to share some of his secrets with you.

I want to talk to you about spin. Because, as we all know, spin gets the ball rolling, it keeps it up in the air and it brings things to a halt when we want it. For me, there is no greater compliment in golf than that much-used phrase of golf-commentators; "He controlled the spin beautifully." And who is the best at controlling his spin? I think we'd all agree that it is Tiger Woods, and he's Number One! Need I say more?

I should add a word of caution here. I hear some so-called teachers saying that certain players are putting too much spin on the ball, that they must learn "to take a bit off". What rubbish!

I've made an entire career out of spin and I'm telling you that you can never have too much of it! Just look at me. I began my career as a humble spin doctor for the Labour Party, but the more spin I used, the more power I got! And despite a couple of occasions when my good intentions were misinterpreted, with a little more spin I was able to recover the sitution and get even more power! And now I'm in Brussels spinning for Europe with a £195,000 salary, unlimited travel and a huge expense budget! So never underestimate the value of spin, whatever your game - you just can't get enough of a good thing!

Even off the course, spin can always be working for you. If you've ever felt embarrassed to discuss your round in the 19th after shooting 103, just think spin! By the time you've thrown in a few "the wind got up on my backswing", "it was straight into the sun", "I'm trying out some new clubs and I'm not used to them", "the four ahead were so slow we couldn't concentrate" and "it's about time they cut the fairways, I couldn't get a clean lie", you'll have everyone believing you're off scratch! Spin is your friend, spin will see you through if you work at it!

So remember, with spin, you're on a roll!
