Tip Humperdinck (Todd Hamilton - Ed) wins four hole shootout with Ernie and says "I play ugly golf"

TROON. Yet another major title has fallen to an unknown golfer as Tony Hamburger (Todd Hamiliton - Ed) held off the challenge of world no. 2 Ernie Els throughout the final round and then over a four hole playoff, after both players finished regulation play on 10 under par in the main event. In the more exclusive field of the Unknown Open the battle for the title was less hotly contested, as Tim (Todd - Ed) held on to his overnight lead and cruised to an 8 shot victory over second round leader Schlepp Holdall (Skip Kendall - Ed).
Tip (Todd -Ed) is now hot favourite to win the prestigious 'Honorary Duffer of the Year' award given by Anyone For Tee to any golfer, amateur or professional, who furthers the cause of the ordinary golfer or Duffer by his or her play, or approach to the game. Toby (Todd! - Ed) has soared to the top of this list for his honest assessment of his game, as much as for being the seventh 1st time winner of a Major Championship in the last eight events. He does not pretend he finds golf easy, nor - mercifully - does he talk about "hitting the ball solid".
These are our unknown champion's own words to describe his Open winning game:
"I play what I call ugly golf - I hit a lot of punch shots, a lot of big slices off the tee, just to keep the ball in play, and then rely on my chipping and putting. I don't hit the ball as good as a lot of well-known players but having a good short game allows me to be competitive."
In other words he scrambles well, and our 2004 Unknown Champion is clearly a jolly good egg. Well done Todd (Hurray! - Ed).
