Round One of the Unknown Open -
Amateur shares top spot!

Goggles, Colander and Walton (Goggin, Olander and Wilson - Ed) lead at three under, as albatross is sighted at Troon!

TROON.  Three players share the lead after the first round of the Unknown Open Championship, just two shots behind the only slighty better known leaders of the main tournament, Paul Casey and Thomas Levet. Maurice Gagging (Mathew Goggin - Ed), Michael Dutchman (Mårten Olander - Ed) and Stephen Wesley (Stuart Wilson - get it right! Ed) fired three under par 68s, and are well placed to make the cut and the fortune of any punters who backed them after Anyone For Tee's recommendations yesterday.

The best performance was undoubtedly that of Wishthorpe (Wilson! - Ed), pictured left, the reigning British Amateur Champion, who achieved his 68 in the nerve-wracking company of former Open Champion Mark O'Meara and Kiwi Michael Campbell, a consistently strong performer at the Open. He beat O'Meara by 3 strokes and was only one shot behind Campbell.

On a day when perfect weather conditions allowed low scoring, the Open field managed every score from 1 to 11, except a 10. 2002 Champion Ernie Els had the hole in one at the short 'Postage Stamp' 8th, Albatrosswhile unknown Neil Evans shot the snipe (6 over par) 11 at the 601 yard 6th. Another unknown, Brett Taylor, gobbled a turkey (4 over par) 9 at the par 5 4th on his way to a round of 86, while grouse (3 over par scores) were too numerous to mention. The galleries were also treated to a rare albatross (right) when Englishman Gary Evans holed his 227 yard five-iron second shot at the fourth.
