Pride in Sandwich as Tiger gives Royal St. George's the ultimate accolade
SANDWICH. Hearts are swelling with pride in Sandwich this week and the streets are decked with celebratory bunting (right), as the Club founded in 1887 and now hosting its 13th Open Championship has been described by world no. 1 Tiger Woods as "..kind of funky".
It is expected that this will replace the prosaic and fusty phrase "the St. Andrews of the south", which fails to recognise the unique characteristics of the Club, the course and their home town.

| Founded in 1887, it has taken 116 years to find the right word to describe "funky" Royal St. George's |
"We've always known we were ahead of our time", said one member of the Club, speaking on condition of anonymity, "but it's good to have this recognised at last by the finest golfer in world."
"This is a proud day for Sandwich", said a spokesperson for the Mayor. "Sandwich can trace its origins back over 1500 years, and we are of course one of the Cinque Ports, but I think I can speak for all the residents of the town in saying this is the proudest moment in our long history."

Visitors to Sandwich for the Open Championship will find a lively community of some 4500 people with an almost latin sense of fun, and a pulsating night-life that is sure to have the golfers partying into the small hours.

| The main drag in Sandwich is clearly identified |
Not for nothing is it "Royal" St. Georges |
| The commercial hub of the town |
For those tired of water, Sandwich has other beverages |
| Centuries of maritime tradition are evident in this town... |
Which once counted numerous sailors among its many visitors |
| Livestock were traded in a thriving local exchange... |
Which made the residents glad of the bracing sea air |
| But imagination was running low as the town expanded... |
Until it failed completely |
Finally, after a long, hard day on the links, Tiger will be able to relax and choose from a wide range of funky eateries that will please the most demanding gourmet. This is truly a town that has everything.

| Exotic tastes are well-catered for in Sandwich's culinary panoply... |

| While those who prefer more traditional English cuisine are not forgotten |
