2001 Open Champion is a multiple major winner - as a woman!
|
On the eve of the 2003 Open Championship, AnyoneForTee can exclusively reveal that 2001 Champion David Duval is not, as so often reported, in the midst of a career slump, but has in fact continued to win major championships in drag on the LPGA Tour, under the name of Karrie Webb!
Webb-Duval is in fact the reigning Weetabix Women's British Open Champion, and due to defend "her" title at Royal Lytham & St. Annes two weeks after the (men's) Open Championship at Royal St. George's.

Initial scepticism over AnyoneForTee's claims has vanished as photographic evidence proves the remarkable resemblance between "Webb" and Duval. |

Officials of the governing bodies for the two Open Championships, the R&A and the LGU, are said to be furious at the deception, and the LGU is expected to demand that Webb-Duval return the Women's trophy, be struck off the winners' roll and, of course, withdraw from this year's Championship. A spokesperson for "Karrie" has however told AnyoneForTee that, if challenged, "she" plans to invoke a recent European Union ruling on the rights of transsexuals (see AFT's May 4 story), and therefore has every intention of teeing it up at Lytham at the end of the month.
Sources close to Duval believe that the immense power of the new generation of pros has a lot to do with David's appearance on the LPGA. "He used to be right up there with the biggest hitters", a fellow pro told us, "but now they're all driving it past him. So he figured that he had of better chance of winning majors on the Ladies' tour."
The strategy certainly worked. In 2001, in addition to the Open Championship, "Karrie" won the McDonald's LPGA and the US Women's Open, and took the Weetabix Women's British Open in 2002. In all, between his one men's major and six women's major titles, Duval-Webb is only one behind his friend and rival Tiger Woods. In one respect, Webb-Duval has done even better. While Tiger has the "Grand Slam" of the four men's major titles, he/she has the "Super Career Grand Slam" of all five women's majors. Might we soon see Tiger, of whom there has been much recent talk of a slump, donning drag to improve his record?
"If Annika Sörenstam can play on the PGA Tour, why shouldn't David or Tiger play with the ladies?", commented Webb-Duval's spokesperson. "It's not as if it's anything new. If you check the records you'll see that David and "Karrie" both joined the pro tours in 1995 - obviously. And David has always been in the best of taste. Just as Annika wore very business-like, masculine outfits during the Colonial, David has made an effort to dress correctly at the LPGA; nice make-up, wig, jewellery, and classic women's golfwear of bermuda shorts and T-shirt. He has his own professional stylist (photo above). Plus, of course, he shaves off that goatee, and does his legs."
"David is just someone in close touch with his feminine side," said renowned Belgian sports psycholgist Jos Vanstiphout (at left). "He obviously feels very comfortable like that, and it shows in his fine performances on the LPGA Tour. I see nothing wrong with it. Instead of complaining, the ladies should take a leaf out of Annika's book, and recognise that they have to move their game up a level. It could be very good for them."
The next three weeks will be crucial for Duval-Webb's career. The pressure, both on and off the course, will be intense. We only hope that, should the luck of the draw pair David with Vijay Singh at Royal St. George's, there won't be a repeat of Vijay's unpleasant male-chauvinist outbursts.
