Poulter keeps his hair on - and wins!

Dyeing moments win Poulter Hairdo of Merit Award as he also takes Nordic Open in dying moments

DENMARK.  British golfing ace Ian Poulter has triumphed in the inaugural 2003 AnyoneForTee Hairdo of Merit after gaining the smaller but nonetheless prestigious accolade of winning the Nordic Open on Sunday.

Poulter (pictured with the Hairdo of Merit Trophy, which is shaped like a futuristic hairdryer) locked up the award for two top-ranking hair-sute performances in the past month.

At July's Irish Open he wore an eccentric hairstyle modelled on the team colours of his beloved Arsenal football team (red and white). But his coiffure outraged the Irish golfing authorities who have banned him from future tournaments unless he tones down the technicolour tints (click here for story). "I kept waiting for Long John Silver to tee off," complained one spectator ."After all, his parrott had already arrived."

Poulter decided to change his game plan - and leave the parrott at home - for the Nordic open, opting for a "cooler" blond and dark brown combination at the Copenhagen event, where he held off overnight leader Colin Montgomerie to win by one shot.

"It was nice to let the golf actually do all the work and stop people talking about the hair," said the parrot after Poulter's victory. "But now, with the Hairdo of Merit Award and two PGA wins this year, there'll be no stopping him. He's proved he can golf, so people will accept the flamboyant hairstyles as part of his personality - it's just part of his roots."

The golfer assured AnyoneForTee that the change of hair colour did not mean any loss of allegiance to Arsenal, whose team fared as badly at the weekend as Poulter fared well, losing on penalties to Manchester United in the Community Shield. "Actually I hope to be modelling their new away strip [yellow and blue, seen left - Ed] next month," he promised.

If Poulter also modelled his locks on the new strip, he would not be the first golfer to sport blue and yellow hair. Patriotic Swede Carin Koch dyed her pigtails blue and yellow in the 2002 Solheim Cup, those being both the Swedish and European Union colours. But somehow it looked good on her...

Montgomerie was left disappointed at coming so close to his first victory in months, and was heard muttering that he had been distracted by his rival's locks. "Looked like a cross between Lady Dye and a bloody Poulter-geist," muttered the irascible Scot.
