Top European golfer banned for hair-brained antics

UK. European golf ace Ian Poulter has been banned from future Irish Opens after turning up at this month's event with an eccentric hairstyle modelled on the team colours of his beloved Arsenal football team.
The 27-year-old English star announced that he was "bringing a new image to golf", explaining: "It could do with a bit of sprucing up."
He added: "The public might enjoy it. There are too many same old styles out there."
But Irish eyes were not smiling, with tournament officials and fellow players saying Poulter's psychedelic locks were way too spruce for their liking.
A member of the Irish Open executive board told AnyoneForTee over a pint of (black and white) Guinness: "Arsenal my arse. To be sure, it's colourful like. But he looked liked he'd been bashed with a shillelagh down at Kitty O'Shea's on a Saturday night. I thought for a moment we'd invited a Greek salad along."

Added a perplexed spectator: "I kept waiting for Long John Silver to tee off. After all, his parrott had already arrived." |

Leading Danish player (and runner-up in the event) Thomas Bjørn was also visibly affected by the Poulter hairdo - whose red and whiteish hues happen to be the colours of the Danish football team.
"First, losing out to Blair, Bobby, Burt, Brogden... Ben... what's his name [Curtis - Ed] in the Open... now this," wailed Bjørn, who, perhaps with a tint of jealousy, blamed his extra-hole defeat to Kiwi Michael Campbell on turning away during a short putt to watch what he thought was a headed Danish goal, only to discover it was Poulter combing his hair.
Poulter had narrowly avoided similar controversy earlier in the month after deciding to dye his hair claret for the Open. But he was thwarted when he found out that the local hairdressers specialised in burgundy, which apparently goes better with an Open Sandwich.

Editor's note:
PGA Tour rules state that "players will present a neat appearance in both clothing and personal grooming, unless he is named Craig Stadler". |
