DENMARK. AnyoneForTee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning, ball-breaking interview with Danish transsexual - now woman - golfer Mianne Bagger has won plaudits in the highest circles – including from Mianne herself – and led directly to the making of a major Hollywood movie.
In a world exclusive, Any0neForTee's Surgical Editor Ivor Scalpel and sidekick Dave Snippet recently interviewed Mianne, accompanied by astonishingly frank award-winning photography from snapper Katya Takelhof.
The story of how two lost balls and a cut-down shaft had changed golfing history caused shockwaves throughout the sporting world. Prompted by Scalpel’s cutting questions, Mianne laid bare her emotions on a range of golfing and personal subjects, including the early loss of her equipment; how she ceased to be a Bagger nerves after her op; and how abandoning her 7-wood had helped her short game.
It was deeply humane stuff, as gripping and moving as Sergio Garcia’s hands on a five-iron approach. And, to her eternal credit, it won the respect of Ms Bagger herself as she wrote to AnyoneForTee: "You guys are funny... and you have waaaaay too much time on your hands to be making up stuff like this." [Mianne, did you say "funny" ?? - well, we knew we were a bit peculiar, but "making up stuff" ??? - every word on AnyoneForTee is researched, authenticated and double-checked with sources. OK, we then throw away all that boring stuff and start improvising, but readers should know there is substance to our abuse - Ed.]
In fact, Anyone For Tee has long championed the cause of the underdog (ever since our tragic story of the unfortunate Pekinese that Craig Stadler sat on at the 2001 PGA) and tried to break down the predjudice that we believe restrains the growth of our great game worldwide.
We have campaigned on behalf of many diverse individuals – when the guru of golfing commentators Peter Alliss came under attack from classless critics we were successful in having him declared an endangered species by the World Wildlife Fund; when former pager 3 girl Liz Hoad was banned by the stuffy authorities at Wentworth we did our breast to have her reinstated; and we even had New Zealand's golf-playing sheep phenomenon Sean Flees saved from a brutal life being subjected to the amorous habits of Kiwi males by sponsoring him on the Ewe-ropean tour.
But Mianne’s response makes her our finest underdog of all. In fact we’ve declared her officially a Great Dane and say it's time for her to stop being hounded by the world's press!
Not only has she displayed great humility but also that rarest of traits among top golfers – humour. Referred to her own excellent website, we discovered a serious side to the transsexual issue, from which we quote freely: "I appreciate the fact that articles written about me are all very positive and that there is no intention of offending or belittling me. None-the-less I would like the media to be aware of the negative impact the continued use of this terminology ['transsexual'] actually has. Ultimately I would like to be referred to as the woman that I am, but of course I realise that the focus on me, and the articles that are written, are precisely because of my past. With that considered, the title of "transsexual woman" will probably always be with me.
"My past is exactly that, my past. Transsexuality is something that I have been treated for and as far as I'm concerned, I am a woman. I now live my life as such, just like any other. I realise that my past is the reason for the articles and my plea to the media is that if the word 'transsexual' is to be used, then only use it if absolutely necessary and that it be used in the context such as 'transsexual woman'; (the word transsexual in itself does not imply gender)."
So there it is. AnyoneForTee says it's time to give the world's undisputed number one transexual woman golfer Mianne Bagger an even break! Mianne for the European ladies tour, we say! Mianne for US Ladies PGA Tour! Mianne for the next European Ryder Cup captain! Mianne Bobby McGee! [that’s enough Ivor! – Ed]
Our interview didn't just win the admiration of Ms Bagger – but of Hollywood. Famous director Robert Redford has since approached the Danish golfer with a proposal for a movie entitled "The Legend of Bagger's Advance", a follow-up to Redford’s 2000 smash hit "The Legend of Bagger Vance" starring Will Smith and Matt Damon, in which a down-and-out golfer attempts to recover his game and his life with help from a mystical caddy.
The sequel is likely to attract a huge audience and an even bigger star cast. This time the plot focuses on a down-and-off golfer's (Mianne) attempts to recover from the constant handicap of lost balls with the assistance of a mystical surgeon.
'Free' Willy Smith will play the pre-op Mianne, while Wesley Snips plays the daring doctor who conducts the operation, with Whittling Houston as his beautiful assistant. And capturing perfectly the reduced length Ms Bagger experiences after her operation, Minnie Driver assumes the post-op role.
Anyone For Tee has exclusively previewed the script of "The Legend of Bagger’s Advance". Especially poignant is the moment following Snips' successful completion of the delicate surgery, when he turns to his assistant and says, "Houston, we have lift-off," and Mianne breaks into the movie’s haunting, tear-jerking theme song, the sure-fire hit 'The Greatest Dane of All'. Editor's note: In the spirit of the new partnership between Mianne and AnyoneForTee, we shall henceforth be publishing "Mianne Watch", a regular feature following the ups and downs of Mianne's career on the Ladies European Tour.
