Saiki's fashion psyche tops fashion stakes as sartorial sense has Candie licked
|
LAS VEGAS. Californian Kim Saiki stormed into the lead in AnyoneForTee’s inaugural Order of Merit for the year’s best dressed lady golfer (sponsored by Gobra - "supporting women's golf for 20 years") at this week’s LPGA Takefuji Classic at the Las Vegas Country Club.
But the tears of joy for tournament winner Candie Kung turned sour after she was told at the prize-giving ceremony that she had also been judged worst-dressed lady.

The diminutive 5ft 4in, 37-year old Saiki, who finished in a tie for 9th for the lesser honour of winning the golf tournament itself, wowed the press corps (see picture at right), gallery, fellow players and AnyoneForTee’s own fashion correspondent Natalie Drest with her gorgeous classic navy and white outfit and fashion consistency throughout the three-day tournament.
“Nicely cut, with a simple yet classic combination of colours,” wrote Natalie. “Navy goes with just about anything, especially a three wood from 200 yards out. And the splash of white gleamed like an Augusta bunker. Kim certainly made an impression on my psyche.”
A close runner-up was Laura Diaz (left) whose dazzling torso and all over tan were shown to great effect in the second round, when she wore a slinky navy sports singlet. This set the seal on a fine first round showing when a daring midriff expose saw her storm ahead of the fashion pack. “Talk about hip," enthused Natalie Drest. "All Laura needs is a pierced navel and she’d be unstoppable come the majors."

Third and fourth respectively, scoring their first Order of Merit points, were Soo-Yung Kang (“an explosion of peaches and hair”, gushed Natalie) and Cristie Kerr for her “what Gary Player would have looked like if he'd cross-dressed” black outfit on the final day.
The worst-dressed title went right down to the wire in a titanic sartorial battle between Candie Kung and Catriona Matthew. Candy just managed to avoid a play-off, mainly thanks to the lead she built up on the second day where, after putting her motel washing machine on the wrong setting, she was forced to play in badly shrunken trousers and blouse. “I had a crisis with my short game,” she muttered to the press afterwards. "I'm going back to the motel to iron out my faults."
But by an incredible twist of fate, Scotland’s Catriona Matthew used the same motel – and the same washing machine! As a result, she had to wear shrunken trousers throughout the tournament and was forced to hide behind hills on the final day whenever she spotted a photographer (see at right). "It was impossible coming down the stretch," she complained.
Catriona’s depressing final day outfit (“she looked like she’s been dressed by David Toms,” said Natalie) pushed Candie over the closing holes, but the latter’s “deadly dull and ill-cut” navy and white combo (pictured at right) ensured that she topped the Worst-Dressed Order of Merit after the season’s first qualifying event.
Also in the points were amateur Aree Song (at far left) for her rather casual interpretation of what constitutes a black tie dinner and the usually impressive Beth Bauer (below right), whose nice Tommy Hilfiger outfit was let down badly by her choice of American Airlines’ eye shades as fashion accessory during a media session in the Golf Channel studio.
Editor’s note: AnyoneForTee's year-end Fashion Awards for World Golf – best and worst, men’s and women’s – have caused a storm in the international fashion industry. Last week, Charles Howell 111 (subsequently known as Charles Howell !!!) stunned the golfing world by simultaneously topping both categories at the Masters.
