Week 24 - Tommy Tolles overtakes Poulter for Nº 1 spot with Grassy Green look!
A sensational turf green look at the Buick Classic by PGA journeyman Tommy Tolles has finally unseated England's Ian Poulter from the world nº 1 spot he has held for a record 157 weeks. Poulter's reign at the top of the Official Hair Fashion Rankings was unprecedented in length, and drew admiration from hairstylists everywhere, but talk of a slump had been growing in the professional ranks in recent months, as Ian struggled with his erractic styling and only saved his nº 1 status thanks to brilliant work with the short sideburns and stubble. Many analysts think he should bury his pride and go back to his old style coach, "Butch" Hairman, who has publicly stated that he believes Ian is in denial over his loss of form. "He keeps saying he is working at it and getting very close to being right, but we haven't seen a new colour scheme for the last eight majors. As for his back-combing, it's all over the place," said Hairman. |

Changes to 2004 Dryer Cup Rankings!
The entry of American Tommy Tolles into the world top 15, and the fall of Colin Montgomery from 14th to 17th spot, promises a very evenly balanced contest at this year's Dryer Cup matches in Michigan.
The top 15 now contains 7 Americans and 7 Europeans (with Shigeki Maruyama being ineligible). Each team is chosen from the top five in the Official World Rankings, plus a captain's pick, so it looks increasingly likely that Monty will miss this year's matches.
The Dryer Cup will take place from 14-19 September at Oakland Hills Country Club & Hair Saloon, Michigan, USA. |

The new world nº 1 is Tommy Tolles!
Tommy has rocketed through the rankings from a lowly 242nd place to top spot, unseating Ian Poulter, with a simple yet stunning green tinted look at the Buick Classic in New York. Tommy has never before shown signs of follicly-innovative behaviour, so we applaud this bold thrust and his well-deserved place atop the World Hair Fashion Rankings! |
 |
World nº 2 - Ian Poulter
Ian has now lost the nº 1 spot he held for over three years, and style analysts agree that his problem is too much tinkering and not enough attention to the fundamentals. "He's focussing on moving the spikes around, which is diverting attention from the real issues of colour and cut," said one leading crimper. "We really need a change of length, and something other than red or blonde streaks." |
 |
World nº 3 - Miguel Angel Jimenez
Miguel has strengthened his hold on the nº 3 position by continuing to grow the length of his pony tail, and styling it into a modern day version of granny's bun. It's a bold game-plan from a man of his age, but it's keeping the youngsters at bay very successfully. We also commend his audacious choice of orange shirts, which most stylists would never dare twin with ginger hair. |
 |
World nº 4 - John Daly
John's "skinhead" look, which made him the last man to hold the nº 1 position before Ian Poulter, earned him so many points that he still retains the nº 4 spot, despite a drop in form. Come on John, we've had the mullet, and the skinhead, but today's look is - well, sorry to say it, but - boring! We are certain it is only a matter of time until John finds the road to tonsorial triumph once again! |
 |
World nº 5 - Darren Clarke
New shape, new fitness, new hair! It's another huge jump up the rankings, from world nº 63 to nº 5, for Darren, who has made big changes in 2004, and can now be seen sporting almost "jesperesque" trousers to complement his new blonde, tousled look. He's even cut back on the stogies - what a sacrifice in the name of golf! Good luck Darren! |
 |
World nº 6 - Shigeki Maruyama
It's not easy to be creative when you are born with the same thick, straight, black hair as your 120 million compatriots, but Shigeki has found a style all his own. Part lavatory brush, part doormat, but all man, and also beautifully de-coloured, Shigeki's coppery-brown mop is the perfect complement to his stylish golf shirts. It's 'Jumbo' Ozaki with attitude! |
 |
World nº 7 - Jesper Parnevik
Jesper is perhaps the coolest man in golf, and with his tight crew-cut and sideburns would surely be higher in the rankings, if his upturned cap did not divert attention from his hairstyle. |
 |
World nº 8 - Padraig Harrington
Methodical and intense in everything he does, Padraig worked hard to find a new hairstyle for 2004 - and it's a winner! Padraig's soft blonde look, daringly leaving his roots au naturel, has scored points all around the world. Judging by the frequency with which Padraig doffs his cap, we reckon he's pretty pleased with it too! Pity about the eyebrows though, Padraig... |
 |
World nº 9 - Tiger Woods
Tiger won a lot of points for sheer nerve with this semi-bleached look, and for a while gained extra points for combining it with a goatee, but a lack of length to open up more styling options prevented him climbing higher in the table. He has since parted with his stylist and left the blonde look to Elin, plummeting down the rankings, but surely will be a captain's pick for the Dryer Cup, should he fail to qualify by right. |
 |
World nº 10 - Jim Furyk
Jim has fallen steadily down the rankings since a wrist operation sidelined him early this year (he tore a ligament attempting a bouffant blow-dry with a curling brush). Prior to that he had reached world number 4 with a brilliant comb-over at the 2003 US Open, neatly hiding his well-mown fairway on a windless day, and we fully expect to see Jim back in play and climbing the table with some new ideas very soon. |
 |
World nº 11 - Fredrik Jacobson
Freddie is an exciting addition to the World Rankings, with his keen eye for fashion and love of detail. Dressed, like fellow Swede Jesper, by Johan Lindeberg, he has the same complete absence of fear about looking a prat. Freddie has moved rapidly up the rankings in the last twelve months, and we fully expect him to be a fixture in the top ten in the near future. Our tip for The Open at Troon. |
 |
World nº 12 - Charles Howell III
CH3, as he is known, is something of an enigma. Another Johan Lindeberg follower, we had high hopes of Charles when he burst on the scene, but his tonsorial innovation has not matched his spectacular long driving, and he is tumbling down the rankings in 2004. You've done the crew-cut to death Charlie, so either take a leaf out Jesper's book and get some funky sideburns, or try something new! |
 |
World nº 13 - Jarmo Sandelin
OK, OK, we know that's not his own hair, but how can you fail to award big points to a man with such stylish nerve? From the tip of his white wig to the toes of his crocodile-skin shoes, and with his personal 'I can outdo Lindeberg' fashion line in between (read here), Jarmo screams "Style" with every shot. What is it with these Swedes, and why doesn't Annika get herself some of it? |
 |
World nº 14 - Craig Stadler
Some would not call it fashionable, but the World Rankings Officials have always admired Craig's ability to carry his 'unmade bed' look right through to his hair styles. Offbeat! |
 |
World nº 15 - Tom Kite
Although now plying the Champions Tour, Tom still has a fine head of hair, and is to the perm what Michael Schumacher is to car racing. No matter how hard the rain, how strong the wind, that style is rock-solid and Tom always comes through looking smart to take the cheque. The younger players may be more creative, but what a fine example Tom is to every golfer now half way through life's back nine! |
