The US$19 billion Duty Free and Travel Retail industry has a thriving golf community. A select few are real golfers. The rest are Duffers, and three of the most notable hold the highest offices in the Duffers Golf Club Travel Retail Chapter.
- FD President Sunil Tuli: When he is not making a fool of himself on the golf course, FD Sunil is General Manager for Merchandising and Operations of the King Power Group... 'King' Power.. maybe not yet, but he certainly has Presidential powers in the DGC...
- FD Vice-President Dan Cappell: Away from the duties of his office, Dan is Deputy Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Duty Free. Before that, Dan catered to the traveller's sweet tooth, selling vast quantities of chocolate and other delights as General Manager of Nestlé's International Travel Retail Division, but he tells us that despite this he has still never managed to find the sweet spot in his driver.
- FD Captain Antares Cheng: When he is not organising golf competitions for his friends and suppliers and hosting the world-famous Travel Retail Friendship Club AGM, Antares is Managing Director of King Power Group and China Power Group, with extensive operations in Hong Kong and mainland China.
Chapter News
September 6, 2003 "Desperate" Dan Cappell has shocked the golfing world by being re-handicapped to 21 (a Duffers handicap of 49). Crap-pell, as he is best known, said he had never expected to see 21 again, and is now concerned that his lucrative side-line in golf wagers may be under threat. The first real test of his new handicap is expected to take place in the Bahrain Duty Free 10th anniversary Open later this month. Click here for the full story.
July 25, 2003 Confirming there is hope for duffers worldwide, Irishman David Spillane recorded his first-ever success in any walk of life when he won the Duffers Golf Club Travel Retail Chapter's annual Travel Retail Friendship Club Open at the Macau Country Club. The event preceded the AGM of the Travel Retail Friendship Club, an association founded six years ago to foster friendship across businesses in the multi-national duty free and travel retail community. July 1, 2003 The DGC Travel Retail Chapter held its first meeting - and indeed the first ever Duffers Golf Club Chapter meeting - at the Macau Golf and Country Club, under the august auspices of FD & President Sunil and FD & Captain Antares. For a rough and ready report on the event (they were always in the rough and always ready for another beer), as well as full details of the embarassing scores, click here.
Portrait of a Member
Never let it be said that the members of this fast moving, global industry do not have thier eye on the ball, perfectly evidenced here by Imperial Tobacco's Asia Pacific Travel Retail Chief John Kammerman at the annual TFAP golf tournament in Singapore.
As with all great players, you can see that FD John had a perfect mental image of the shot he wanted to play, and was determined not to spoil this vision by actually making contact with his ball.
When told that he was to be the subject of this month's "Portrait of a Member", FD John commented: "If I'd known, I'd have done up my flies! Only we were playing 'Sluts', and I'd failed to get pass the Ladies' tee on both the previous holes. How much for the negatives?"
If you have a compromising picture of a fellow Chapter member that you feel is worthy of full public exposure (golfing situations only, please), send it to plainbrownenvelope@anyonefortee.com and mark it "Privates and Absolutely Not Confidential" for consideration by the Committee, whose decision is final (cash preferred). Thank you.
