MACAU. Confirming there is hope for duffers worldwide, Irishman David Spillane recorded his first-ever success in any walk of life when he won the Duffers Golf Club Travel Retail Chapter's annual Travel Retail Friendship Club Open at the Macau Country Club late last month.
The event preceded the AGM of the Travel Retail Friendship Club, an association founded six years ago to foster friendship across businesses in the multi-national duty free and travel retail community.
Fellow Duffer David runs Genesis Distribution, an Irish company that specialises in the sale of licensed and confectionery products to travel retail. He is Treasurer of the Travel Retail Friendship Club and responsible for its annual misappropriation of funds, which usually involves investing the Club's entire cash reserves on an outsider at Happy Valley race track in Hong Kong.
Fellow Duffer David played off 24, which was described by one of his player partners as the "worst example of banditry since Jesse James was in his prime".
"Me a bandit?" complained FD David to AnyoneForTee. "I have a genuine handicap as anyone who has ever known me will testify."
Fellow Duffer David played steadily to secure victory on a countback with 36 stableford points, despite suffering serious dehydration in the blazing Macau sun - later successfully cured with an intravenous drip of Heineken. This was largely thanks to his pallid Irish complexion and blazing ginger-chromed head, which caused his fellow players to complain that they did not know whether to stop or go when on the putting surface, due to the combination of red and green.
He was followed closely by Kevin Ling from British American Tobacco (BAT), and then Yoshifumi Soejima from Japan Tobacco, both of whom could be heard gasping for a drink rather than a cigarette. The tournament was open to duffers and "divots" - low handicap players accorded a special exemption status to participate in DGC events but not eligible for prizes.
The tournament was kindly sponsored by Fellow Duffer & TR Chapter Captain Antares Cheng, Managing Director of King Power Group.
A special word of thanks also from the members of the TR Chapter to Judy Yan of King Power Group for her tireless work in organising the meetings, and for putting up with them all.
